Elevator Interior Design Selected by The State Of MA To Modernize The Elevators In The Suffolk County Courthouse

Elevator Interior Design (EID), along with partner companies 3Phase Elevator and Kone, have been hired by the State of Massachusetts to refurbish the elevator cabs inside the historic Suffolk County Courthouse in Boston, MA. The courthouse, located at 3 Pemberton Square, is home to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state’s highest court.

Built in 1893, the courthouse was designed by the City of Boston’s first architect, George Clough, and is one of the city’s few surviving 19th-century civic buildings. In 1974, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

In November 2019, the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) awarded a contract to 3Phase Elevator and subcontractors EID and Kone to modernize seven elevator cabs within the six-story granite structure. To get the project underway, EID’s design team created a mockup that included modernizing the courthouse elevator cabs with oxidized bronze interior finishes, and granite side walls mounted on lightweight honeycomb backers.

To ensure the state’s satisfaction with the new design, project managers from EID, 3Phase Elevator and Kone met with representatives from DCAM who reviewed and approved the mockups at EID’s headquarters in Lynn, MA.

The installation of the modernized, refurbished cabs as well as an upgrade to each elevator’s mechanical systems began at the courthouse in late 2019. EID and its partner companies expect the project to be completed within budget and on time by late 2020.
