South Station, Boston, MA

Elevator Interior Design (EID) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as the company of choice to furnish and install 36 custom elevator cabs for the South Station project in Boston, Massachusetts. EID is partnering with TK Elevator, who oversees the complete vertical transportation portion of the project.

The project will consist of the completion of the South Station Transportation Center at the lower levels of the project, plus the addition of a 51-story, 1,020,000-square-foot mixed-use tower. The development will include 711,500 gross square feet of office space and 166 condominium units in 308,500 gross square feet.

In addition to its emphasis on sustainable design, important considerations in the master plan were the preservation of the historic South Station train station building, the linkage of the existing train station and bus terminal, and the ability to facilitate the future expansion of the train station.

The 678-foot glass tower will be built above the platform between the historic South Station head house and the Amtrak and commuter rail lines. It will consist of mostly office space (659,000 square feet of it, out of the tower’s total square footage of 876,000) and 166 condos, as well as retail space at its base.

In addition to its emphasis on sustainable design, important considerations in the master plan were the preservation of the historic South Station train station building; the linkage of the existing train station and bus terminal; and the ability to facilitate the future expansion of the train station.
